If you use the internet or email it is absolutely essential to protect you computer from attack. For many users, maintaining security with a collection of freeware programs is a more complex task than they are comfortable or confident with. If this describes you, then I strongly recommend buying a commercial internet security (IS) suite or try the free Microsoft Security Essentials.

There are lots to choose from and you will probably have heard of many of the market leaders. They vary in effectiveness and ease of use, as well as in price. Some of the best known are: Norton, Kaspersky, McAfee, AVG, Bullguard, Panda, Zone Alarm, Trend Micro, F-Secure. It can be difficult to choose!  A useful site which has reviewed many of the suites on offer www.itreviews.co.uk/ (At the top of the page click Software and then choose Security from the list of categories); another useful set of reviews can be found on PCAdvisor’s website.

My personal favourite (and the one I have been using for the past few years) is AVG. Although it is a little  long-winded to set up, I find it simple to use and very effective.

However, it is important to remember that no security suite is totally effective and you will still need to be vigilant. It is sensible to support your IS suite with one or two of the free applications mentioned on previous pages. I would particularly suggest Spybot (update, immunise and scan every month) and Malwarebytes (update and quick-scan every couple of weeks).
